Acorns Class

A Message from the Class Teachers, Miss Holt and Mrs Dengate

Acorn Class June 2017

Welcome back to school Acorns and to Term 6!  We hope that everyone enjoyed a safe and happy break.

The school year is certainly flying by but we still have lots of things to pack in before we break up for the summer holiday, before that though let’s have a little recap of last term.......

Acorns’ school days are packed with learning, discovering and exploring, so much so that there seems little time to draw breath sometimes!  In amongst our busy days we have been busy planting and growing seeds, learning how to care for them and provide what they need to grow.  We also dissected fish so that we can better understand the different parts of their bodies and how they have adapted to live in the environment they inhabit, Miss Holt didn’t like the smell much but it was fascinating!

We also had to deal with some very peculiar happenings when we thought we were being treated to some yummy sweets, only to find that the bags contained something very different indeed!  We learnt how to deal with an unsatisfactory situation and wrote our own complaint letters.  We got an apology and some sweets, so everything turned out well in the end!  We learnt that if you set out a problem clearly and politely things can be sorted out in a nice way.

Turning to the term ahead.......

On Thursday the 22nd of June the whole school will be participating in a special “Try Something New Day”, where we will all have the opportunity to do just that – try something we haven’t done before!   Letters have been sent out about this special day and we’d like to thank everyone who has offered to participate and help.  There’s always room for more though so if you are now available, having thought perhaps you could not make it, please let us know.

For the children who will be leaving Acorn class at the end of this term we will help them in this transition with “Move Up Week”, which will give them the opportunity to spend time with their class teacher and fellow Aspen classmates.  For those moving from Y1 to Y2 they will be learning about taking responsibility and looking after the new Acorns.  “Move Up Week” focuses on fun learning and is usually very enjoyable for everyone.  However, if you have any concerns at all about this transition period please do come and talk to us or one of the Acorn team so that we can help.  More details will be available nearer the time.

During RE lessons this term we will be exploring our Christian Values and linking them to parables from the Bible. The children are hard at work designing their own class Worship Area which we are very excited about. They have some fantastic ideas and have begun their own class prayer book with some wonderful prayers.

The children have also asked to have a trophy/award section in our Worship Area, so if children have any out of school achievements/awards they would like to share with the class or bring in to display in this new area we would love to see them (we will of course make sure they are kept safe!).

Please can we remind everyone (if you have not already done so) to bring in some photographs of family/pets/places etc that are special to the children (we can print/copy these at school if necessary).  Again this is for a project we are working on for the class Worship Area.

Our topic work on the “Seaside” will be continuing this term, in particular we will be learning about Grace Darling, Continents and Oceans.

Our Science topic this term is ‘Hands on Science’ where we will have opportunities to carry out lots of exciting experiments and investigations.

We hope that you will find the following information useful as a reminder of some very important information:

As last term PE will take place every Wednesday afternoon, however please make sure PE kits are in school all week for any additional physical activities that may take place. Every item of PE kit (as well as uniform) must be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

The home learning menu for this term will be based upon our topic of ‘The Seaside’. The children’s showcasing of their previous home learning last term was once again fantastic and we were blown away with all of their hard work and creativity. Well done to everyone and we look forward to the next one!

We will continue to send home spellings and times tables each week on a Thursday for your child to practise along with their daily reading.

Spiderman the Penguin has continued to enjoy his weekend stays with different children so far and he’s looking forward to lots more “sleepovers” and adventures with you all.

Travelling Bear has also been enjoying his holiday adventures.  Remember if you want him to go on holiday with you all you have to do is write a letter inviting him along, if his diary is free he could be going with you on your next holiday!  You can keep up to date with his adventures by looking at his diary.

Good behaviour and kindness are positively encouraged in Acorn class.  There are opportunities to be rewarded for good conduct and effort with stickers, house points, monster points, penguin punctuation points, wrist bands and raffle tickets.

As always if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Acorn staff team.

Thank you for helping us by supporting your child’s learning both at school and at home, which is invaluable to their continued progress.

Acorn Class Trip to Whitstable (10 images)

We all enjoyed our trip to Whitstable especially visiting the RNLI lifeboat station.

RNLI Beach Safety (4 images)

The RNLI came to talk to Acorn Class about keeping safe at the seaside. We were a little disappointed there wasn't a swimming pool to go with the dolphin!
