A Message from the Class Teachers, Miss Holt and Mrs Dengate

Welcome to Term 6

We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful break and look forward to hearing about everyone’s adventures during the holiday, did you visit family, friends, go to a museum, or a park perhaps?Did you see a good film, read a good book? There will be opportunities for the children to share their holiday experiences with the class and of course we can’t wait to hear from the children that have taken part in our reading challenge competition.

One of last term’s highlights was our class trip to Wingham Wildlife Park.  The children were beautifully behaved and we hope they all enjoyed a day of learning outside of the classroom to enhance their Animal topic work.

Acorns also enjoyed a day of learning outdoors when they took their classroom to the woods at the end of last term!  Our thanks to Mrs Foord for organising a wonderful day.  The children thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills, how to respect the countryside and the wildlife, we even cooked on an open fire!  We all went home very satisfied, somewhat tired and smelling a little smoky!

There’s always so much to pack into Term 6, it’s going to be busy for sure so please keep an eye on the school’s website and the letters being sent out to keep you updated on all the important dates for your diary.  Here are a few dates to be aware of for starters:

Sports Day is planned for Thursday the 14th of June, weather permitting!  There is a reserve Sports Day if the weather is not good and that will be Thursday the 21st of June.  The children will be “in training” for their various activities during PE this term so please ensure children have the correct PE uniform, clearly labelled, in school at all times.  We hope as many parents/carers/siblings can come along to cheer on all the participants!

For the children who will be leaving Acorn class at the end of this term we will help them in this transition with “Move Up Week”, from the 2nd to the 6th of July.  This gives them the opportunity to spend time with their new class teacher and fellow Aspen classmates.  For those moving from Y1 to Y2 they will be learning about taking responsibility and looking after the new Acorns.  “Move Up Week” focuses on fun learning and is usually very enjoyable for everyone.  However if you have any concerns at all about this transition period please do come and talk to us or one of the Acorn team so that we can help.  More details will be available nearer the time.

More details on these and other diary dates are available on the school website.

Our topic this term continues to be ’The World’ but we are going to be focusing on the theme of will be ‘Chocolate’. We (Miss Holt is very excited about this one!) where we will be learning about countries that help to make chocolate, Fairtrade, the History of chocolate and balanced diets. Our learning will not stop there. We will also be creative in ways to incorporate ‘The World and Chocolate’chocolate into ICT, Art, DT, Science and French too!

Our RE lessons this term will continue to be learning about Islam. We will be exploring Muslim beliefs, places of worship and learn all about Ramadan.

We hope that you will find the following information useful as a reminder of some very important information:

Please remember that ‘Show and Tell’ will take place on a Friday afternoon only.

As last term PE will take place every Wednesday afternoon, however please make sure PE kits are in school all week for any additional physical activities that may take place. Every item of PE kit (as well as uniform) must be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

The Home Learning menu for this term will be based upon our topic of ‘The World’.topics. The children’s showcasing of their previous home learning last term was wonderful and we were amazedblown away, once again, with all of their hard work and creativity. Well done to everyone!

We will continue to send home spellings and times tables each week on a Tuesday for your child to practise along with their daily reading.

Mrs Penguin has continued to enjoy her weekend stays with different children so far and she’s looking forward to lots more “sleepovers” and adventures with you all.

Travelling bear has also been enjoying his holiday adventures.  Remember if you want him to go on holiday with you all you have to do is write a letter inviting him along, if his diary is free he could be going with you on your next holiday!  You can keep up to date with his adventures by looking at his diary.

Good behaviour and kindness are positively encouraged in Acorn class.  There are opportunities to be rewarded for good conduct and effort with Marvellous Me points, house points, marbles, penguin punctuation points, wrist bands and raffle tickets.

For further information on what is coming up in Term 6, please don’t forget to look at the school’s website, where you can find lots of useful dates and information.  As always if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Acorn staff team.

Thank you for helping us by supporting your child’s learning both at school and at home, which is invaluable to their continued progress.

Advance warning – Miss Holt is getting married in the summer holiday!

When we return to school in September Miss Holt will be Mrs Wood.  We thought this advance notice may help the children to get used to her new name but of course she will happily still respond to Miss Holt for all those inevitable occasions when we all forget!
