At Milstead, we aim to provide a practical broadly balanced mathematics curriculum which will suit the individual needs of our children and show them the usefulness and relevance of maths in their everyday lives. We place a high priority on mathematical achievement and all classes have a daily maths lesson. All work is differentiated to suit the needs of all our children.
We encourage the children to apply what they have learnt in their Maths lessons in practical ways and you may for example see see children weighing ingredients to cook with, working out averages for team points or teaching other children a concept they have already mastered themselves.
To support the mental dexterity with numbers we learn number facts, such as number bonds and times tables. These are regularly practised and tested - often in fun ways like times table bingo or Big Maths Beat That. Key Instant Recall Facts (see link below) are really useful for you to use at home to support tyour child's fluency in number recall.
Outside of the daily Maths lessons, children complete their ‘5 a day’ which is where they develop, practise and apply their methods for and understanding of the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
We have a school account with Sumdog which offers appropriate maths activities and games online. All children have their own log in and password.
