Oak Class (yers 5 and 6)

A Message from the Class Teacher, Mrs Mason

Here’s a look ahead to the term ahead:

English

In Term 5 we will be basing some of our English work on “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare, particularly during Writing Week when we will be writing spells and preforming drama activities.

We will continue to look in depth at the grammar and punctuation that can improve our writing, and have spellings every week based on different spelling patterns and the year 5/6 word list. We will also be focusing on GPS questions similar to the ones the year 6s will encounter during their KS2 Tests later this term.

We will be also continue using a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to explore and answer reading comprehension questions. Our focus will be using evidence from the text to explain answers and to use inference skills to read between the lines.

Maths:

Our Maths focus for the early part of the term will be converting metric units and exploring angles and geometry.  We will also focus on reviewing the skills we have already covered in preparation for the KS2 Tests – again using similar questions to the ones they will encounter.

As always, our Maths is dependent on a fluent knowledge of times tables and number facts.  It remains vital that the children practise these as part of their home learning.

Topic

Our topic until the end of the year is ‘Day and Night’ which will tie in with exploring Earth and Space in Science and will included researching significant people such as Tim Peake and Neil Armstrong. We have a visit from the Astrodome booked for Wednesday 23rd May, which will give the children the chance to experience a planetarium and to consolidate their learning.

RE

During our RE sessions, we will be exploring ‘Creation and Fall’ in Christianity, through looking at bible stories and Christian beliefs. We will be exploring how Christians believe the world was created and some of the stories from the early part of the Old Testament.

PE

PE this term will be taught Andy and will take place on a Thursday afternoon.  Please make sure that your child ALWAYS has a full indoor and outdoor PE kit in school to ensure they do not miss out. As the weather heats up, shorts and a cap are advised.

Home Learning

In addition to the termly Creative Home Learning, children are asked to do the following on a weekly basis:

  • Daily Reading (home or school book). Your child will need a reading book in school every day. It is expected that your child will read for a minimum of 15 minutes, at least three times a week. Please ensure that once you’ve read with you child, their reading record is signed to reflect this.
  • Times tables and maths recall facts (for weekly tests)
  • Spellings (for weekly tests).
  • For year 6, there will also be some additional revision work in maths, reading and GPS which they are encouraged to complete.

Please feel free to come and chat with me, preferably after school, if you have any questions or concerns.

The Oak Class Team consists of:

Mrs Mason – Class Teacher
