A Message from the Class Teacher, Mrs Mason
Welcome back to the new school year. Oak Class have a busy year ahead and this term sees us getting off to an exciting start with our learning.
Here’s a look ahead to the term ahead:
This term we will be using the novel ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty as a springboard for our English work. Set during Victorian times and based on a true story, this text will be used to inspire our writing as well as some drama and role-play activities. We will also be focusing on reading comprehension and, as well as exploring ‘Street Child’ in depth, we will be looking at Victorian poems and stories, including some by Charles Dickens and Alfred, Lord Tennyson (among others).
This term we will be exploring place value – including numbers to one million and decimal numbers with up to three decimal places. We will also be revisiting the four operations (including decimal numbers) starting with addition and subtraction. Times tables and number facts will continue to be practised for weekly checks.
Our topic ‘Through the Decades’ will start off by looking in depth at the Victorians, including exploring how railways and industry changed Britain. This will include a class trip to Kent Life where the children will be invited to come in costume and participate in a Victorian Theme Day.
We will be looking at forces and investigating concepts such as gravity, friction and water resistance. We will be using these concepts during our Design and Technology sessions to design cam toys.
During our RE sessions, we will be learning about Jewish celebrations around birth, coming of age, marriage and death rituals.
PE this term will be taught by Andy and will usually take place on a Tuesday. Please make sure that your child ALWAYS has a full indoor and outdoor PE kit in school to ensure they do not miss out.
In addition to the termly Creative Home Learning, children are asked to do the following on a weekly basis:
- Daily Reading (home or school book). Your child will need a reading book in school every day.
- Times tables and maths recall facts (for weekly tests)
- Spellings (for weekly tests)
The children will be given a plastic wallet to help them organise their belongings, especially those that travel between school and home.
Thank you to all of the parents and children from Oak Class for making me feel so welcome. I am looking forward to an exciting and learning-filled year ahead.
Please feel free to come and chat with me, preferably after school, if you have any questions or concerns.
The Oak Class Team consists of:
Mrs Mason – Class Teacher
Miss Wallwork – Teaching Assistant
