A Message from the Class Teacher, Mrs Mason
Here’s a look ahead to the term ahead:
In Term 4 we will be basing our English work on “The Princess’ Blankets” by Carol Ann Duffy which is a picture book aimed at older readers. We will be using this to write character and setting descriptions which will lead to writing our own narratives. Our topic text will also tie into this.
We will continue to look in depth at the grammar and punctuation that can improve our writing, and have spellings every week based on different spelling patterns and the year 5/6 word list.
We will be also using a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to explore and answer reading comprehension questions. This will particularly assist the Year 6s as they head towards their SATs in May.
Our Maths focus switches this term from fractions to decimals, in particular comparing and ordering decimal numbers and using numbers with decimals in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions. We will also looking at comparing fractions, decimals and percentages and converting one to the other. For year 6s, we will be looking ratio and algebra whilst year 5s will be extending their understanding of multiplication and division.
Once again, our Maths will be dependent on a fluent knowledge of times tables and number facts. It remains vital that the children practise these as part of their home learning.
Our topic through until Easter is “Food” with a current focus on the ancient Maya civilisation. We have a trip to Brogdale Farm in Faversham planned in March which will give the children a chance to celebrate this topic through cooking.
This term, we will also be reading the book “The Hero Twins” which is a Mayan myth. This will tie into our English work as we write our own versions of this tale.
As we finish up our focus on “Properties and Changes in Materials”, we will begin investigating “Animals Including Humans”. This will include looking at life cycles and how humans develop to old age.
During our RE sessions, we will be exploring Salvation and the Easter Story in Christianity, through looking at bible stories and Christian beliefs. We will be exploring why Jesus died and who was responsible for this.
PE this term will be taught Andy and will take place on a Thursday afternoon. Please make sure that your child ALWAYS has a full indoor and outdoor PE kit in school to ensure they do not miss out.
In addition to the termly Creative Home Learning, children are asked to do the following on a weekly basis:
- Daily Reading (home or school book). Your child will need a reading book in school every day. It is expected that your child will read for a minimum of 15 minutes, at least three times a week. Please ensure that once you’ve read with you child, their reading record is signed to reflect this.
- Times tables and maths recall facts (for weekly tests)
- Spellings (for weekly tests).
Please feel free to come and chat with me, preferably after school, if you have any questions or concerns.
