At Milstead, we aim to provide a practical, broadly balanced mathematics curriculum, which will suit the individual needs of our children and show them the usefulness and relevance of maths in their everyday lives. We place a high priority on mathematical achievement and all classes have a daily maths lesson. Activities and teaching are differentiated to suit the needs of all our children and aim maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement.
We follow the National Curriculum and the Village Academy has created a progression document to ensure coverage of content. We also use White Rose to develop mastery, reasoning and problem solving activities that challenge and extend children’s thinking and give them the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge.
We encourage the children to apply what they have learnt in their maths lessons across the curriculum areas (such as science, computing and design technology) as well as in practical ways. For example, you may see children weighing ingredients to cook with, working out averages for team points or teaching other children a concept they have already mastered themselves.
To support mental dexterity with numbers, we learn number facts, such as number bonds and times tables. These are regularly practised and checked - often in fun ways such as times table bingo, Big Maths Beat That - as well as our school-wide times tables challenge where children can earn certificates and badges to celebrate their achievements. Key Instant Recall Facts (see link below) are useful for you to use at home to support your child's fluency in number recall.
Outside of the daily Maths lessons, children complete daily fluency activities (either Five a Day or Fluent in Five) which is where they develop, practise and apply their methods for and understanding of the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. During this time, children will also be able to develop their reasoning skills through word and multi-step problems coverage a range of key mathematical concepts.
The school has an account with Times Tables Rock Stars with the children in Acorn, Aspen and Oak Classes all having their own login. We also have a school account with Sumdog , which offers appropriate maths activities and games online. All children have their own log in and password.
